::11.17.2007 - Favorite Fall Fruit Time!
Here is why the fuyu persimmon is my favorite fall fruit: durability, portablilty, edibility, availability.
- Durability - I can throw one (two? three?) of these things in my bag and not have to worry about bruising (apples), mooshing up (bananas), sploding (pears - I'll explain in another post)
- Portablity - It is small and flattish, unlike the unweildy jackfruit, dangerous pineapple and cumbersome melon
- Edibility - I can eat nearly all of it, leaving almost no waste. They largely do not have seeds, the flesh is edible, and the little leafy topknot is the only thing you can't really eat (although I welcome you to try!)
- Availability - They are seasonal, so no Chilean-grown bland superfruit here! Also, since I have to wait for it, I don't burn out on it. It's like an autumn reward! It's my reward for having to suffer through a summer of bananas! (Seriously, I SUFFER THROUGH A SUMMER OF BANANAS.)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not some kinda fruit hater, I just like what I like. I like bananas, just not all the time. I also like Bing cherries, Satsuma, honeydew melon, Galia melon, cantaloupe, concord grapes, figs, blueberries, strawberries and peaches...
