Good evening party people. I realize I haven’t updated here in a long time, but I’ve been trying to get all of my priorities straight. You see, I feel like maintaining a general “blog” type blog is too cumbersome, and frankly I’m bored with it. I’ve decided to focus my attention in two separate areas; music and Japanese food. As such, I’m putting together a Japanese food blog which will go live this week. The current “tangentbot dot com” site will then be re-tooled into a tangentbot-music-only place where I can stick my new songs, link to my albums (Cyclops’ Lament & You Are Used To This Kind Of Advertising) and not have it cluttered with recipes and rambling. I may create a general blog on down the road, but that is tentative at best. I really wanted to showcase two of my passions and past-times with two, well thought out sites.
Stay tuned for more info on this!

I tasted this about a week and a half ago and it was sweet! It was the strangest thing. I blame the Brussels sprouts. It finally started to grow pungently familiar, so I pulled it all out of the crock tonight.

My search turned up nothing. 20 seconds wasted. Here’s the thing; I bought a couple packages of tofu MONTHS ago. One was fron July, one from August. Now, I eat a lot of tofu, normally. These just happened to get pushed to the back of the fridge and forgotten. So, upon finding them, I noticed that the packages weren’t all puffy and bulging. Intriugued, I cut open the packge and lo and behold: no smell. A faint, briney scent maybe (or that could just be my sauerkraut bubbling away nearby), but nothing off-putting.
Now, if you’ve ever smelled tofu that has spoiled, you KNOW something is wrong. It is bad news bears, honest-to-god awful. The packaging had kept any air (and sub sequentially, bacteria) from initiating the fermentation process and spoiling the tofu, yet it still managed to take on this strange, vinegar-like aroma. I was all ‘evs, and I cut off a hunk and ate it. It was good! It tasted exactly as I imagined (and hoped). I cut some up for my miso soup that day and it was still really good! I was worried that it may make me sick, so instead of throwing it out, I wagered my health against a $.99 pack of tofu and I WON!
Okay, so AT YOUR OWN GASTRO-INTESTINAL RISK, here’s how you, too, can try this ‘sour tofu’.
- Buy some SunLuck brand tofu in the sealed containers.
- Put it in your fridge.
- Wait 2 months past the expiration date.
- Open and enjoy!
**I tried looking for info on the net about sour tofu, but all I found were sweet and sour tofu recipes.
